Can you voice chat with AI characters?
Yes, on the voice-enabled tiers. Voice changes the experience more than most feature lists admit: pacing, pauses, and tone do a lot of the work that text has to spell out.
How it works
You can speak your message instead of typing, and the character can reply with generated audio. The text of the conversation stays in the thread, so you can scroll back and read what was said. The voice is generated, not a recording of a human actor.
When voice is better than text
- Short, emotional exchanges where timing matters.
- Practising a conversation in another language.
- Hands-free sessions while walking or cooking.
When text is better
- Long roleplay scenes with a lot of detail.
- Anything you want to edit before sending.
- Quiet environments or shared rooms.
A good voice implementation does not just read the reply aloud. It leaves room for you to interrupt, keeps the character’s tone consistent, and does not turn every sentence into a performance. That is the bar we design against.
