Are AI character chats private?
Private enough for a conversation, not a substitute for a vault. Treat an AI chat like a message to a service that stores the thread so you can open it on another device.
What happens to a message
Your message is sent to the service, passed to a language model, and the reply is streamed back. The account system stores the conversation so the history survives a refresh. That is the basic trade: convenience for persistence.
What to avoid
- Passwords, card numbers, government IDs, or private keys.
- Other people’s sensitive information.
- Anything you would not want in a support ticket.
What you can control
You can delete individual chats, clear your history, or delete the account from the settings panel. Deletion is designed to remove the account and its chats, not to keep a hidden copy for later. For the exact retention rules, read the privacy policy linked in the app; it is the source of truth, not a blog answer.
One practical habit: use a display name and a username that are not tied to your real identity. The character does not need your legal name to be a good conversation partner.
