What makes an AI companion feel natural?
Not perfect prose. Not endless enthusiasm. The uncanny part of a good companion is restraint: it knows when to answer, when to ask, and when to leave a sentence alone.
Five signals
Consistent voice. The character does not become a different person when the topic changes. Vocabulary, rhythm, and boundaries stay stable.
Useful memory. It remembers the emotional shape of the last conversation, not just a list of facts. It can refer back without reciting a transcript.
Initiative with manners. It can move a scene forward, but it does not narrate your actions or decide how you feel.
Repair. When it misreads you, it can adjust without a paragraph of apology. Recovery is part of the persona.
Room to breathe. Short replies are allowed. Silence is allowed. Not every message needs a speech.
What breaks the spell
Stage directions in every line, constant questions, therapy-speak, and memory that resets at the worst moment. The fastest way to test a companion is to change the subject and come back. If the character can follow the return, the continuity is real enough to build on.
A companion should feel like someone who was already in the room, not a machine waiting for a prompt.
