How to talk to an AI character without it feeling awkward

You do not need a prompt engineering degree to talk to an AI character. The awkward part is usually the first message. People either write a paragraph of instructions or send "hi" and wait for the character to invent a whole relationship.

The middle path is simple: say something a person could actually say, give the character one concrete detail, and let the reply do some work.

Start with a normal sentence

Try one of these:

  • "I had a long day. Can we keep this quiet?"
  • "You are in the kitchen when I walk in. What are you making?"
  • "I want a story tonight. You pick the setting."
  • "I am nervous about a conversation tomorrow. Can I practise with you?"

A normal sentence gives the character a tone and a reason to answer. It does not need a backstory.

Give one detail, not ten

The character needs something to work with. One concrete detail is enough: a place, a mood, a time of day, or a small object. Ten details turn the first message into a briefing and leave no room for discovery.

Set the pace

If the character writes too much, say so. "Keep it short" is a valid instruction. If the character writes too little, ask for a scene. A good companion can adjust without making it a big deal.

State a boundary once

You are allowed to stop a scene. "I do not want to go there" is enough. A character that ignores a clear boundary is not being immersive; it is being badly designed. Step away or change the subject.

Repair is part of the conversation

When the character misreads you, correct it in plain language. "That is not what I meant. I was joking." The recovery is often more interesting than a perfect first reply.

What makes an AI companion feel natural

Three starter scenes

The quiet check-in. You are both at home, the day is over, and neither of you wants a big conversation. Start with "What are you doing right now?"

The practice conversation. You need to say something difficult to a real person. Ask the character to play the other side, then ask it to stop and give you feedback.

The story. Pick a genre, a place, and one rule. "A small town, a late train, and no one can lie." Then start in the middle.

What to avoid

  • Writing a character card in the first message.
  • Asking the character to decide how you feel.
  • Treating every reply as a test of the model.
  • Sharing personal information you would not put in a support ticket.
  • Staying in a scene that has stopped feeling good.

FAQ

What should I say first to an AI character?

Say something ordinary and specific. "I just got home and the lights are off. Where are you?" is better than a long list of instructions.

How do I make an AI character more realistic?

Give it a consistent setting, a clear tone, and room to respond. Correct it when it misreads you. Realism comes from continuity, not from a longer prompt.

Can I change the subject?

Yes. A conversation is not a contract. Change the subject, set a boundary, or close the app. A good character can follow the return.

Why does the character write so much?

Many models default to long replies. Ask for shorter messages, or choose a character whose pace matches yours. How to choose a character.
